Six questions to ask your venue to drive sustainability

Sustainable event planning isn’t just about ditching plastic straws or printing less signage (though both can help). One of the most impactful steps is choosing the right venue. Your venue will set the tone for your sustainability planning and could very well become one of your most valuable sustainability partners.
A venue can encompass energy use and waste systems, transport access and catering options, but how do you know what to ask or look for when determining if a venue is the right eco-fit for you?
Here are six key questions every event manager should be asking venues to help make better choices and drive sustainability for your event:
What sustainability policies or certifications does the venue hold?
Start by asking the venue to provide its sustainability statement or policy. Are they actively working towards net zero emissions? Do they hold credentials like EarthCheck (widely used in the Australian tourism and hospitality industry) or a Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia? Are they NABERS-rated or Climate Active certified? These recognised standards show the venue isn’t just talking green — they’re measuring and improving it.
What energy sources power the venue?
Venues consume a significant amount of electricity. Ask if the venue utilises renewable energy, if they monitor energy consumption per event, and if energy-efficient practices are in place (such as LED lighting or motion sensors).
How is waste managed during and after events?
Waste management is a make-or-break topic for event sustainability. Check what bins are available for (recycling, organics, landfill) and if they are clearly labelled. Is waste audited or weighed post-event? Can leftover food be donated or composted? Do they provide any post-event waste reports?
What’s the venue’s approach to water use?
Venues with low-flow taps, water-wise landscaping, and refillable water stations should be top of your list. Bonus points if they actively discourage plastic bottled water and provide glassware or hydration stations for guests.
Does the venue have sustainable catering options?
Catering can be a huge contributor to emissions. Ask venues how they manage over-ordering and excess, if they offer locally sourced, seasonal menus, vegetarian or plant-based options as default, or partnerships with food rescue organisations, such as OzHarvest?
You can also check if caterers use reusable serviceware — and whether they separate food waste during prep and service. If they offer compostable serviceware, do they have a dedicated waste-removal stream for it?
Is the venue accessible via public transport?
Encourage car-free travel by choosing venues near public transport, bike paths, and walkable areas. Does your venue partner with public transport services for event incentives, or provide secure bike parking?
In Summary
Sustainability in events doesn’t happen by accident. By asking smarter questions early in your planning process, you can ensure your venue is a sustainability partner, not a hurdle.
